What I launched

I led the conception, strategy, and design of YouTube Handles: a new global identity system that introduced unique usernames to 5 Billion channels.

Partnering with the founders of Unicode, I helped pioneer internationalized usernames, making YouTube the first global platform to support unique usernames across 75 languages.

The opportunity

YouTube had grown into one of the world's largest creator platforms, but its identity system was never designed for a world where creators needed to be uniquely identified across comments, Shorts, communities, and the broader internet.

Creators could claim eligible usernames, access alternates reserved specifically for them, and understand how Handles would impact their existing identity as well as channel. The system also enabled YouTube to roll out Handles gradually giving billions of people flexibility while introducing a fundamental change to the platform.

Handles introduced a new identity system to YouTube, giving every channel a globally unique username. I designed a flexible claiming experience that balanced creator choice with the complexity of rolling out a new identity system at massive scale.

Why it was challenging

Identity is deeply personal

Through extensive research, we learned that creators saw their handle as an extension of their brand and identity, not simply an identifier.

Introducing Handles meant changing how Billions of creators represented themselves on YouTube. We designed the rollout around transparency, choice, and clear communication to build trust and minimize disruption.

YouTube was already an established platform with billions of existing channels, each with its own history, audience, and brand presence. A first-come, first-served approach would have ignored the equity creators had already built and created unnecessary conflict around username ownership. We needed a more thoughtful allocation strategy - one that introduced a new identity system without disrupting established creator brands.

A singular system that worked for the world

Supporting internationalized Handles introduced challenges that didn’t exist in Latin based usernames. Some languages can express significantly more information within the 1-30 character limit, creating inconsistencies in identity length and readability.

With Unicode, we developed a language density framework to account for these differences and create a more equitable system across languages.

Today, more than 1 Billion YouTube channels have internationalized Handles.

The strategy became the product

Handles fundamentally changed how billions of creators represented themselves on YouTube. The phased rollout and communication strategy successfully introduced the change without widespread creator backlash.

A landing without disruption

What began as a challenge of assigning unique usernames became a broader strategy for safely assigning billions of existing identities. The rollout proved that YouTube could introduce a foundational platform change at massive scale while maintaining creator trust.
